2020 Emonda SLR Weight Loss
Moderators: MrCurrieinahurry, maxim809, Moderator Team
Took delivery of my 2020 Emonda SLR late last October. It was ordered with Sram Force AXS and rode super well. Yet I wanted to go ahead and see how much weight I could remove if I went Sram Red 22 Mechanical.
Here are some pictures and the weight of the bike before I began my project
7194 grams w/o pedals and cages
Components List AXS
Shifters: 476 grams
Calipers: 346 grams
Sram Centerlock Rotors: 234 grams
Front Derailleur: 199 grams
Rear Derailleur: 325 grams
Force Crankset 48/35 172.5: 807 grams
Force Cassette 10-28: 266 grams
Force Chain: 259 grams
Bontrager Montrose Elite Saddle: 220 grams
Bontrager Pro V3 TLR wheels: 1590 grams
Bontrager R3 Clinchers: 430 grams
Bontrager Tubes: 130 grams
Bontrager XXX 420mm Bars: 176 grams
Bontrager Pro Blender Stem 100mm: 132 grams
Seat Mast Cap: 130 grams
I didn't weigh the frameset but Trek claims 690 grams for an unpainted 56cm which is what I have and the fork is also claimed to weigh around 350 grams, add a few hundred grams for the pink paint & bearings and I estimate the frameset at 1300 grams.
Here's the updated bike with Red 22
5896 grams w/o pedals and cages
Component List Red 22
Shifters: 303 grams
Spyre SLC Flat Mount Calipers: 308 grams
Ashima Ai2 Rotors w/ti bolts: 160 grams
Front Derailleur: 74 grams
Rear Derailleur: 147 grams
Crankset 50/34 172.5: 579 grams
Dura Ace 9100 Cassette 12-28: 204 grams
FSA 11 Spd chain: 232 grams
Selle Italia SLR Saddle: 129 grams
Farsports Tubular Wheels with Extralite Hubs: 1026
Tufo S3 Lite: 430 grams
Effetto Mariposa Tubular Tap: 56 grams
Don't think I forgot anything. If I did I'll update the thread. Enjoy

Dang... already crazy light and I can see even more places for further trimming...
- Cut steerer tube... unless of course you need the bars that high
- New thru-axles that don't have the lever attached... My Domane axles have a removable lever that is an Allen wrench so it doesn't stay on the bike
- 140mm brake rotors... If you're not a heavy rider, going from 160mm rotors to 140mm won't likely matter (it didn't for me). You'll save the rotor weight and be able to remove the rear caliper spacer
- Delete valve caps... Not sure what value valve caps add to Presta valves
I need the stackPoorInRichfield wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 4:06 pmDang... already crazy light and I can see even more places for further trimming...You might need to carry an anchor in your pocket when riding 'cause if you get off the bike, it might float away!

I will get thru axles down the line, need to give the pocket book a rest for the moment
I'll stick with 160's since I'm 205lbs
Love the pink valve caps, I'll suffer thru the 1.5 gram penalty
Can't wait until I can take her out on some serious climbs.

titanium brake cable clamp and stemp clamp bolts. XG1199 cassette.
Moved to introduce yourself. Nice bike btw.
Great looking bike and nice weight savings.
You probably meant XG1190 cassette.FactoryMatt wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 6:09 pmtitanium brake cable clamp and stemp clamp bolts. XG1199 cassette.
Interesting that despite all of the technology that SRAM has baked into it's two generations of ETAP / AXS, there's still something refreshingly clean about "old school" mechanical Red 22... Doesn't hurt that it's still one of the (THE?) lightest overall gruppo out there...
Very nicely done. I would second the thru-axle recommendation as your next step. Personally, I went with the Robert Axle Project T/A's for my Crockett, and haven't looked back. They're lightweight and very stable. You likely already carry a multitool, so you free up a bunch of weight by omitting the handle.

And I've already looked into those thru axles. They're on my Christmas list
Time to resurect this post with some updates. I was able to shed a few grams with new thru-axles and an Extralite stem
Old Bontager thru-axles
New Robert Axle thru-axles
Old Bontrager stem
New Extralite stem
Update total weight
One third of a pound lost. Next up on the gram shaving schedule are the Growtac Equal Brakes to hopefully save another 40 or so grams. Can I get his Project One to 12.5 lbs?
