So what’s the consensus on the fastest rolling 650x42mm? I don’t need tread, but it has to do well tubeless. I’m currently using the compass baby shoes, but I don’t trust them tubeless after a couple of failures.
How are these modern gravel tires doing on hookless rims?
My wife is quite small and I’m trying to find her a set of fast rolling gravel tires to throw on a set of spare MTB wheels. She’s 100lbs and would be riding ~25psi on a 700x42.

I have run Compass in 32mm, 35mm, 38mm and 44mm, plus Gravelking 38mm on 2 different models of hookless Light Bicycle MTB and gravel wheels, without issues.LeDuke wrote:How are these modern gravel tires doing on hookless rims?
The 35mm and 44mm were also set up tubeless, thought the recommendation from Compass is hookless OR tubeless, but not both.
I think getting a reliable setup depends on the combination of wheel and tyre. There is not yet a standard for tubeless. Some combinations are too tight, and some are too loose.
I'm running Panaracer Pari-Motos 42 on hookless rims, no issues. 80kg rider, 3.5 bars. Pari Moto 38mm and Schwalbe G-One Speed 50mm also worked fine.
I find that hookless rims are good to about 70 psi. Specialized did a study and found that hooks offer 15% more bead holding power than hookless.LeDuke wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 3:18 amHow are these modern gravel tires doing on hookless rims?

If you are pushing the limits of your tires in corners at high 60 psi, then I would recommend hooked rims. Otherwise you should be good with most tire and rim combos. A particularly loose setup might give my pause, but at sub 40 psi it doesn’t really matter.
Ride fast Take chances

Well I’m off to Strade Blanche with a pair of Teravail Rampart 650X47B Light & Supple TLR tyres.
Fitting was easy with the tyres seating quickly and holding air without need of sealant.
I’m using Mavic UST rim tape with Milkit valves & sealant.
It’ll be interesting to compare the ride to the 700X28C Vittoria Open Corsa Controls I’ve used before.
Will report back once I’ve got out on them.

Well, first impressions are good! Cornering on a tyre with extra sidewall took a little time to get used to but they are fast an super comfy!

1) Motorcycle and car tires see much larger forces since radial tension rises with tire diameter. This is the reason why fat tires are *harder* at lower pressures.
2) MTB carbon rims aren't hookless because it's easier to manufacture - early carbon rims had hooks - but because hookless sidewalls are stronger.
3) A tight bead seat has nothing to do with manual inflation - this is determined by the rim well. At inflation, the tire is nowhere nead the bead seat.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.Marin wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 2:58 pmUgh so hard to read and wrong too. Still, he sells great tiresspdntrxi wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 6:02 pmFresh off the press :

I wonder if you feel discrapency between gravel speed and pavement speed?rides4beer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 3:05 pmThe Conti Terra Speeds are def fast, I'm using the 40mm and have ridden them on several A+ group rides. They def take some extra work to hold 20+mph, but they're happy to do it. Also fantastic on the gravel of course. Will prob be my goto tire for the gravel racing around here. Not sure if I'll run them for DK200 yet tho, but I haven't had any durability/puncture issues so far.
I don't have a power meter on gravel so I don't know for sure but it feel like
On actual gravel (hard pack, loose stone, light sand, anything off pavement), Terra Speed is the fastest tire I've tested. But on pavement, Challenge gravel grinder feel faster. Maybe it's the matter of almost non existence tread pattern in the middle of Challenge gravel grinder vs bumpy dots on the Continental?
I don't exactly know, maybe it's all in my head.
