So, the power unit isn't holding much charge anymore and I'd like to change the battery inside it. Can anyone advise what type of battery is used, I don't want to take it apart before I have the replacemant.

I'm surprised you have a v1 that still works. My original one lasted a week and the second one was replaced once they had v2.
I would look into finding a v2 and once you know you can buy one, take yours apart and report back on your findings. Take a lot of pictures.

I'd be seriously afraid of anything v2 at this point. My v2 bike is on 10 hrs ride/charge cycles, and my choice is something over 1kusd in parts ( it chorus/athena) to make it work with the current v3 battery (actually a v4 w/ the right firmware to make ti work w/ v3) or to solder a bunch of hair thin wires. There are used v2 batteries available but their health is a question mark.

That is true, batteries will eventually stop working.
My v2 is at least 10 years old and since my is hiden inside my handlebar stem, I cannot see what lights are indicating. In those 10 years, I have only had a low battery issue once. Fortunately, it was on the trainer. Other than that, I charge mine up when I feel like it. Usually every few months.
I do have a new Athena EPS groupset that the battery is regularly charged up. Someday, it's suppose to go on my rain bike.

Please post info when you do it.
I don't know what battery the v1 used. V3 uses three 14400 batteries. I am betting that v1 also uses the same or, at least, some other generic battery.

I remember opening one long time ago. It had pouch cells. They went with round cells when they changed to v2 to be able to fit inside the frame.
I don't recall the space inside, but should be able to fit some round cells I think.
