All in this bike cost me about 7k to build from the frame set since plenty of good deals. The bike climbs as good as anything and the handling is A+
I’m in a similar position looking to build a light weight specced climbing bike. I’d began with looking at the Emonda SLR and after watching Rides Of Japan, I was convinced the Emonda was the way to go. BUT my Trek dealer told me to hold out and until the new Emonda launches this summer. The problems is I need a new bike now as I spend 6 months of the year away at work.

And that’s where the R5 comes in. I hadn’t considered it until today and now it’s looking like a hot contender. Could you tell me a little more about your build and any special components you used to get the weight down. Which wheels did you use? I’ve seen the Avian handlebars and they seem really light!

No new photos since I swapped to the Avian Canary. The bike in the pic with the stock Cervélo bar and 120mm stem weighed 6.74kg with pedals, Cages and Garmin mount. The Avian, Saddle and seat post saved me 400 grams.

What's your budget?

Tifosi isn't something I'd buy, instead I'd try to find identical frame from the actual factory (i.e. their aero frame is just rebranded Yishun).

With that said, Elves Vanyar 2024, Winspace SLC 2.0 are good choices IMO, or maybe even Delihea Tank if you are on super tight budget (~900g frame based on, but not a replica of SL7)
I've got 650 so far with all the bits I have sold, still to sell a Ribble SL rim brake frame and my enduro MTB, which will all go to the final build, I can get a large mons intergrated frame new for 600 which I think is a good buy as I want to keep the rest of the budget for wheels, group set etc I think I can go quite light, and I'm happy on 28s
If you're talking pounds or euros then I'd strongly advise going second hand. Things are going really cheap on the second hand market right now, it's nothing like it was during COVID..
I'm still not seeing this but everyone keeps saying it. Maybe it's more specific to certain regions. Certainly it's nothing like Covid but I'm still not seeing a huge drop, at least not for modern builds from the past 4-5 years. I'll stay patient...(looking for a decent-ish bike for rainy days, off-season rides, trainer bike)

That’s really nice. Pretty much the same build as I have configured but with Ultegra. Were you not tempted to go with the 35mm Hypers?

Can you confirm which Avain you ordered OD1 or OD2? How is the Canary? Are you noticing a lot of flex?

It’s crazy how much you can save with those three components.

Do you rate the R5?

I originally ordered the 35mm Hypers but was later told the spokes were back ordered 2-3 months so I went with the 45's
Avian is OD1, it feels a bit flexy when sprinting for me but not overly negative for me. I max out around 1,050 watt peak so not a huge sprint for my 75kg
The R5 is my 2nd favorite bike I've ridden after my Soloist. For a pure handling perspective and light weight it's one of the top 3 bikes IMHO. I've ridden or owned SL6,7,Venge,Evo3,Evo4,Dogma 8-10-12 and Scott Addict RC so I've had some great race bikes

Would also love to see a pic of your R5 with avian cockpit. Did you use a wedge insert for the D shaped steerer?

I'm considering getting the Falcon for my Cal5 which I think uses the same spacers/stem.

Thanks, I really appreciate your input. I’m a bit of Trek fan boy and wanted to do an Emonda build but the current version is getting long in the tooth and the new one is around the corner but too far away for my next build.

The more I look at the R5, the more I want one. It looks like it can handle wide tyres up to 34mm? I’m really torn between the Oxblood and the mat black…

If you get a chance I’d love to see your set up with the Avian bars.

Thanks again.

I'll be back home March 13 and can post some pictures then of the Avian. I had them 3d print the spacers which fit perfectly when I ordered the bar. I'm on my way to Lisbon and then Algarve for some work and riding after but unfortunately looks like rain for my 4 days of riding

Does anyone have any good recommendations for BB’s? I’m not familiar with BBright. I’m looking for something suitable for DUB standard, using an after market crank

BBinfinite make some great Bottom Brackets. I'd recommend any of theirs before other brands if you want to only buy it once.

C-Bear bottom brackets are great and used by some professional teams too. Their web site not as good as the products, though.
