Wonder if it's related to this (from back in October this year, on the Di2 thread):

ooh, interesting, FCC didn't send me an email this time - odd!
Super cool. I wonder if this explains the delay in 12s GRX Di2 as well. Maybe they got around certain patents by providing an option for fully wireless or semi wireless.

It definitely does. It makes no sense to have a centrally located internal battery when the only device connected to it would be a rear derailleur.

- 1x with battery at RD derived from next gen MTB (makes sense as most MTB frames do not have storage for a central battery anymore)
- 2x with connector for central battery derived from 105/UT
- 1x with connector for eMTB/eGravel bikes only
I too am betting is has something to do with Srams patent on removable batteries mounted to the derailleurs... By having a wired port in addition to a battery, perhaps it gets around that. I'm still using AXS on the mountain bikes, but the second they offer a 12 speed fully wireless setup I'm all in, heck, I'm probably in even if there is a wire mixed in there somewhere...
Schematic of electronics in this dual control lever (not complete bicycle part, just electronics) can be found in labeling info:
