It's mostly dependable on WHEN you shift...
For example :going up a hill already, once you start dropping cadence it's time to shift to the small ring with one gear down the cassette in rear . It's instant and you almost don't feel it... Keeping cadence steady...

When going small to big rings, it's time to shift right before the hill levels up, and dropping one cog up on the cassette..

This way you still shift under some load, which is better and are ready for the downhill.
