Still a bit of a dumpster fire. Stability for me has improved but usability has not. Release cadence has also slowed significantly. I've had to disable a number of features to make it liveable, which is unfortunate. I miss audio alerts for some things, but couldnt live with them for ALL the things all the time. I still get pointless and unwanted off-segment alerts but at least I can't hear it beeping incessantly. I miss climbpro, but I dont miss it constantly blowing up Live Segments when I want them most. Syncing is still hit and miss unless you force it manually. Just stupid things that Garmin should have worked out by now.

There's not a better alternative at the moment, so I'm sticking it out. Something I'm sure Garmin are all too aware of.

My 840 solar has largely been problem-free. The only issue I've experienced thus far has been the WiFi sync not working, so after every ride i'm having to use the Garmin Connect app on the phone to sync, which seems to take a LONG time.

Have the initial usability issues with the 540 highlighted by Ray at DCR been addressed?
I would like to replace my 2016 Edge 520 unit and upgrade to the 540 as I am fine with buttons as long as they work. Personally, for my use case, I see no sports feature that would justify 100+EUR more.

So far, the only issue I have had with my 840 has been operator error. Sure wish my Varia Vision worked with this. I hate having to put an old 820 in my back pocket.

One thing I can say, the 820 does not keep a good record of the speed. It seems that the 840 has a much better way to see the GPS satellites while under the trees. Much more consistant. The 820 drops a good 10mph or more in the shade.

So I am having issues with my 1040 solar.

Courses that I download through third party apps (like RideWithGPS) and then open in connect usually don't send to the device even when I manually prompt it. They appear in the Connect app courses list.

Has anyone else had similar issues and been able to resolve them?

The Garmin devices can only store like 100 courses. So you need to delete them periodically.

Anyone know how to disable nag prompts to stay in zone during workouts? They obscure important data.

So, I will reawaken this topic from the dead.

I’ll preface this by saying I always come back to the 1040, BUT:

1) Strava Live Segments are still inconsistent
2) Having a big issue with LiveTrack where, if I lose cell signal, apparently the link goes out for the rest of the ride
3) Re-routing is generally poor
4) Random, head unit initiated decisions about what to show at times

All-in-all, it’s a good unit, but very frustrating at times.

On the flip side, it seems that Hammerhead have corrected most of my complaints with the Karoo (battery life, screen readability, phone connectivity, and speed). Wonder if it’s worth trying out

I have just switched back to karoo3 from 1040 (previously I had been using k2)

Don’t hesitate any longer, it’s completely different experience.

I immediately recalled my own opinion about garmins - devices with billions of features and some of them even sometimes work flawlessly… or just expensive box of bugs.

I still love/hate my 840. It is a great device full of bugs that I've slowly learned to ignore. Disabling tons of features helps.

I like the Connect ecosystem. I love my garmin watch. I like my other garmin products. It is just the buggy af Edge software that makes me crazy.

I would probably jump to K3 if it weren't for the rest of the connect ecosystem.

How does the K3 compare to the K2? I have a K2 and I kind of dislike it.

Oh, good question. Yesterday I was doing the workout I and took k2 just to see what differs…
There are not so many differences:
Faster UI, much brighter screen with well working autobrightness function, louder beeper but nothing spectacularly justifying upgrade. If you like k2 and want to spend some money - buy it.
If k2 has lots of disadvantages for you and you counted they will be resolved. No, they aren’t.
It’s almost the same device with proven functionality!

The only few things that prevent me from jumping ship:

1) Connect ecosystem
2) Windfield
3) Not knowing how decent the Live Track feature is
4) The Climber feature on Karoo is confusing to my small brain

Everybody has different needs but from my perspective the only feature I miss is garmin connect.
It’s frustrating to see at the watch how vo2max dropping although you workout as hard as usual.

Oh come on you think that estimation is even remotely reliable?
