I have a love/hate relationship with Garmin. I've had many problems over the years. The 520 was the only one that ever worked well. My current Garmin, a 530, started undermeasuring total ride ascent by about 15-20%.
I just called Garmin about the 530 ascent issues. They told me it's a known issue with the vacuum seal on the altimeter. They cut in a change in production to address the issue. They're sending a replacement. Good news.

they're quite easy with replacing products however i've now needed to replace every single Garmin product i've ever owned at least once..(PM/headunit/watch etc)

I am currently upgrading my Garmin 810. I just recently purchased the Varia (without the camera) but it seems like it drains the battery quite fast. I was down to 20% from a fully charged battery on a 3.5-4hr ride. I am guessing the new 1040 has a longer battery life but just wanted to hear people's thoughts here. Thank you!

I bought and tried the 1040 (non solar), had 30% battery drain in 1,5h hour... Brightness was set to high though. Power + Heart Rate + Core Sensor.Compared to the Karoo which lacks 'nice to have' features but feels modern. The 1040 feels like a calculator from the late 90s, its not fast nor beautiful to look at. Constantly lagging in menus, but does most think okay, at least it support all major sensors.

Sadly I feel that there is no manufacture doing both function and form - its either one of them.

I feel like the 530 hits the sweet spot in terms of form factor and functionality for me. The battery life is VERY long and in most situations is a non-issue for me. When I need navigation it works well enough. Not great, but serviceable. I don't really need a touch screen so that's larger, fancier computers don't much appeal to me. The cycling dynamics and nutrition features in the 530 are mostly not useful to me. I just want to see my data, navigate around new places when I need it, and get long battery life.

If you set the 1040 to auto brightness and ride under the sun, it consumes very little battery per hour... maybe less than 5% with multi-band GPS (very accurate, major upgrade) navigation (typical meh Garmin navigation logic), BT phone connection, AXS, PM and HRM. The translfective screen is great under bright sunlight but looks a bit pale comparing to 830/530.

Don't trust the DCR review that the navigation calculation time. It's definitely not instantly.

Also, it's a better time to buy it as the 14.x firmware seems to be fixing lots of funny bugs. Typical Garmin I'd say.

True, setting an Edge to anything but auto seems like a mistake almost on the magnitude of applying tubeless sealant to the outside of the tire, just far more frequent

With or without solar? Some say the difference is noticeable, I wonder how much it is compared to typical differences between devices/generations (which seem kind of random to me)

Heh, Garmin back on the track of innovation! Previously, when new Edge units were hardly more than repackaged older units or repackaged more expensive units the old "don't by an Edge that hasn't been on the market for at least twelve months" meme was disappearing to a faint memory 😆

Exactly, I was also thinking of getting a new one, but the form factor of 10X0 Edge is a bit to large for me. Ideally 130 with a higher res screen so you can fit more on the screen :)

Did they say when they started changing production to address this?
Is there a way to tell which models are updated? Thanks

I didn't ask. If you're concerned I would give them a call with your serial number.

New to Garmin from wahoo. bought a 1040 solar - it's freaking amazing. It does not charge on it's own from solar but maintains the battery charge that's there. 4 hour ride and it used 4% of battery life.

I'm wondering if there is any leak of the release of 540/840/solar line. I suppose no later than Q2 next year.

I picked up a non solar 1040. Was going to keep using my 1030 but the digitizer went on the fritz, getting a replacement screen and will use the 1030 for the MTB. The 1040 is a nice upgrade, the route calculations are multiple times faster then the 1030. Overall the whole UI is snappier. Excellent battery life also. The only issue I seen to have us the smart notifications, will show the same text multiple times in the list and freezes/hangs up for a bit. I like the smart notifications when it's during work hours and I'm in the middle of a ride. But as it is now it's completely useless. Hopefully they figure that out, my 1030 never had that issue.
