New garmin product 1040edge, 840, 540
Moderator: robbosmans
I rarely ever put a course in but when I do, I do like the climb pro.
I do not do software so how they do it is above my grade. If you are on a hill and there is a Y in the middle, how does the system work? Does it just list two climbs? 1 to the Y and the other from the Y to the left or right?
Basically, once I start to ride, I may swipe left or right, but rarely use navigation. Everytime I have played with the Garmin on Navigation, it has never gone well for me. Courses are set up on Strava lately but I used to use Map My Ride before that.

I don't agree.yinzerniner wrote: ↑Thu May 26, 2022 11:51 pmHighly doubt the 840/540 will be updated at least for another year or two since that's how they did the xx30 updates. The 830/530 were only released in 2019, while the 1030 was in 2017. 4-5 year product cycle with a refresh (like the Plus models) seems about right.
"Standard"-Cycle with Garmin headunits used to be roughly three years.
2019: 830
2016: 820
2013: 810
2010: 800
2014: 1000
2017: 1030
2020: 1030 plus
2022: 1040
2010: 500
2013: 510
2015: 520
2018: 520 plus
2019: 530
It gets a bit fuzzy with the 520/530 and the "plus" models. But in general it used to be 3 years.
Not sure if this "delay" is related to CoVid or whatever.
I hope the 840 won't arrive to late.... 1040 is too big and heavy for me.
Who knows....maybe we will see a 1040s and a 1040x for the folks that want smaller or bigger units
Interested in buying Carbonsport Lightweight wheels with broken spokes.

Just seen the 1040. Still has a large bezel but battery life of 100 hours via solar charging is nuts.

I hope the Karoo 2 isn't considered an improvement because it's terrible. Looks nice indoors but I sold mine after a couple rides because you couldn't see anything on it in the sun.
I hope the 1040 has a louder tone than the 1030 Plus. The 530/830 tones are pathetic. I upgraded it to the 1030 Plus but it's still very weak compared to my buddy's Bolt. One problem is the tone's pitch- it's too high. People lose high frequency hearing when they age.
I've had this happen, rarely. I think it can happen where I drop points when building routes in Strava. Hasn't happened in a while so maybe it's been fixed with an update.Tonytony wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 7:37 amWhen my navigation is on, I sometimes get a wrong pop-up when I need to make a turn. Most of the time it's a random turn somewhere else in the route. Someone has the same problem?
This is the only problem I've got with my edge 530, apart from that it's really good. Long battery life (20h with navigation), fast enough,...

As much as I like new equipment my 1030plus is everything I could possibly need. Outside of solar charging and better connectivity (if available) to my stages someone has to convince me that I must have the 1040 over the 1030 plus and list why....
New device generations are rarely expected to convince owners of the predecessor to upgrade. They are usually induced to improve competitiveness for first time buyers or for people looking to replace a much older device. It would be foolish for Garmin to continue making an outdated device only because what they could build instead wouldn't be quite a shut-up-and-take-my-money upgrade from the predecessor yet. Update frequency seems about right (almost 50% more runtime? How is that something they shouldn't bring to market!)

I think this typically occurs due to errors with the base map when a route is created. I have seen this on routes I mapped with RideWithGps in which I am clicking along the roads with the mouse and the segments appear to be a contininous line but actually includes a small jog or detour due to an erroneous road junction/intersection on the base map.BigBoyND wrote: ↑Sat Jun 04, 2022 11:04 amI've had this happen, rarely.
