Good to know. And does the increased pad clearance/travel on the new DA calipers come from the lever reservoir or caliper design? In other words, will RX4+ calipers also see greater clearance with the new levers?
The clearance of brake pads is a function of the caliper, what might be more important is will the old levers have enough stroke without servo wave to use the old levers with the new caliper.

I'm planning on ordering the new calipers (BR-R8170) for my R8070 Di2, the extra 10mm clearance should hopefully make a difference, already running the 12speed chain.
Try it. Or please someone trys and reports. I would instabuy that.
Shimano compatibility chart says no :( Guess the shifters have larger fluid tank.
I was also interested in the extra clearance and found that Shimano has updated their compatibility chart. The new 8100/9200 calipers are compatible with the old 8000/9100 levers.

I was a bit surprised that Shimano gives official clearance to using old stis with new calipers. But that's good news. I will try the opposite and build new stis together with 9170 calipers. It is very very rare that I have the known tingtingting after descents so I believe I don't really need new calipers and can get away with the old ones. But I do like the better modulation of my grx levers (with servo) and I hope this will transfer to my 9270 levers and 9170 calipers. Might take a while to find out though...

Do we think the new levers work with the old Junction box?

I've been told no by CS direct.

They shall release a new model with longer cage apparently.

However, I'm sure the 9100 model could work with some fiddling, albeit, maybe not perfectly.

and more cables........
It would be better to go directly to the new connection box..........If you do not have to put an adapter to the SD300 cable that comes from the new shifter and another SD50 cable from the adapter to the connection box that you already have

I've been mixing road and mtb Di2 in the past. This is what I suspect.

Let's suppose you'd want to go from 11-speed to 12-speed. The 11-speed crankset appears to be compatible.
Thus far, Shimano Di2 rear derailleurs have only been compatible with a specific number of gears. Moreover, the electronics of your junction box are now in the rear derailleur. So you'd need at least the rear derailleur along with a 12-speed cassette and chain.
The shifters are dumb knobs, so your old shifters will likely be compatible. The same goes for the battery.
The front derailleur is the question. It hasn't been possible to mix road and mtb front and rear derailleurs, I expect the same to be true for mixing 11- and 12-speed. I therefore expect you"d need the 12-speed front derailleur too.
I would be beyond shocked if one could use 9150/8050 shifters even with the 12s front and rear mechs- Shimano is way too greedy to let that happen, even though I feel like they could easily release a firmware update to make 11s shifters compatible with 12s derailleurs.
2014 Madone 5.9 w/R9100 shifters and R8000 everything else- using 38mm ICANs or 60/90 SuperTeams- 7.25kgs with the ICANs and Garmin Vector S dual sided PM pedals- not super light but not a dog, either!

Has anyone had any experience with using 12 spd disc brake calipers with 11 spd shifters? And seen any improvement?

I'm specifically thinking of upgrading my 105 calipers to Ultegra 8170 as I need to replace my brake hoses at the moment.

So I would be using R7020 Shifters with R8170 calipers. Hoping for a slight upgrade in braking, where if I wanted to upgrade components to say 105 di2 when it comes out, I could keep the calipers.

Hi,
since new calipers (br-r7170/8170) are now officially compatible with previous generation STIs (st-r7020/8020 so even regardless of servo wave), do you think it would be worth a shot to try e.g. br-r7170 with even older st-rs685 (this one actually has servo wave) non-series Ultegra level STI?
