Moderator: robbosmans
While I have no idea on how Campagnolos finances look, I can say that for as long as I can remember, Campagnolos death have been advertised as eminent here on this forum

I've been on the 1st and 2nd generation Dura ace Di2 11s and it's pretty good, just as good as 12s EPS.ultimobici wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:04 amA while ago I’d have agreed with you, but after a few years on Di2 I find it more user friendly.

The more user friendly is just related to the common Campagnolo drowbacks (higher cost for spares/less compatible part options/etc).

Just to note, Centaur 11 hasn't been discontinued.Aakoo wrote: ↑Sat Sep 30, 2023 8:00 amTarmac SL7 Sport is equipped with mechanical 12s 105.AJS914 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 6:45 pm
Going by street prices I'm seeing:
$1000 - 105 12s di2 disc
$700 - 105 12s disc mechanical
$400 - 105 11s dsic mechanical
I did a quick look at the Tarmacs and the Emonda. To hit price points, they aren't using 12 speed mechanical at all. Their cheapest bikes are 11 speed 105 or even 10 speed.
This is propably true, but does not apply to Campagnolo which has nothing to offer on the lower price point to disc brakes and also nothing to rim brake bikes since discontinuing Centaur. Chorus is the most expensive mechanical disc brake groupset on the market (well, for some reason Sram is still producing Red 22), and then there's Record and SR. Shimano relased 12s mechanical only for 105, and Sram didn't bother at all. The market leaders see no future for mechanical shifting on road bikes, and are releasing electronic groupsets at the 1000€ price point. And what does Campa produce? A wireless solution to which the batteries alone for the derailleurs cost 400€.

Problem is, while it may still be available, the website suggests it is not. No mention of it on the public site. The only listings for mechanical groups are Chorus, Record & Super Record.graeme_f_k wrote: Just to note, Centaur 11 hasn't been discontinued.

I sincerely hope that Campagnolo is able to release a sub 1700€ electronic disc groupset. All mechanical lineup with 5000€ wireless groupset cannot be a winning strategy for the coming years. Also would like to see a flat bar shifter for Ekar...

I'm unfamiliar with that saying, is it the same as: "No chance" ?ultimobici wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:14 pmNot a prayer!!Aakoo wrote:I sincerely hope that Campagnolo is able to release a sub 1700€ electronic disc groupset.

Sure Campag could bring the cost of WRL down significantly with different materials but all that effort would be for nothing. The vast majority of 105 Di2 and Apex/Rival AXS is made for OEM use. Shimano and Sram already produce in Asia meaning their shipping costs to their OEM customers is lower and very often tariff free. Campag would have to either move production to the Far East to put them on similar footing, or eat the cost of import/export for the OEMs. Neither is viable.

Yeah, Campagnolo won't have mainstream-level success with a cheap volume group. I suspect they never had, but I know very little about the market at the time of 9s and older. But I believe that they need some "baseline" groups for the high end to thrive, even if they are not big earners.
But just like car brands offer "halo cars" to increase the status perception of their much cheaper volume offerings, I believe that a groupset brand needs baseline groups (or call it "inverse halo" perhaps?) to increase the practicality perception of their high end groups. Something for the greying SR-buyer to suggest to the young padawan without being forced to painfully jump over their brand loyalty shadow. SR WRL would feel much less overpriced if it was an upgrade for those who want/can treat themselves. Now it feels more like the brand taking loyalists hostage if they can't/don't want to ride mechanical.

Campag don’t show any signs of going down the full electronic rabbit hole Sram & Shimano have in their higher end offerings. If this is the case, I can see them carving out a niche for themselves with Ultegra & Force level customers who feel abandoned as a result of the purely electronic offerings.
Updating centaur to 12 speed and removing the insular pull ratio that they currently have would be a good move too.

Problem is, that high/mid-end mechanical gropuset niche is so small, not even the market leaders in that space thought it was a hill worth defending.
And even if there was a significant userbase with perference for mechanical, that buyer has to care about physical cables more than they care about using 95%+ of modern, high-end framesets on the market today.
