Jesper Skibby topples to the ground on The Koppenberg in 1987, having been unable to keep momentum on the steep hill. He had been in a long escape, which is why the commissaire's car is behind him, believing Skibby would make it over the climb before the peloton got to him... Sadly, the commissaire was wrong, and the car-driver had to sacrifice Skibby's wheel in order to get around him, as stopping on this hill with the race right behind him was not an option....it came within a whisker of crushing Skibby's foot!

Following this incident, the Tour of Flanders organizers made the decision to remove the climb from the race route, and this series of images have become a classic set for Graham. To commemorate the reinstatement of this historic climb, we have produced The Koppenberg poster.

ImageHinault is suffering, but Lemond's just out for an easy spin.

Lemod winning the '89 worlds is my favorite though.

I have this (zoomed-in on Greg) in b&w on perforated vinyl 6 feet high. I think it came from an Interbike display...

Thanks, that's the version I was really thinking of. It does seem that Greg's right knee is angled out quite a bit, but he won, and that's what counts.

Yeah. I have always thought that the photo is the perfect ambassador for the sport: the thrill of victory, agony of defeat, crap conditions, the interface of man and machine...perfect.
