What a claim, I have 3 road bikes with power meters and there's no 30w difference between that position and the drops. (my forearms are not straight up and down in the drops tho)Steve Curtis wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 1:11 pmI saw somewhere that aero hoods - forearms level with the ground, is around 30w more aero than drops.

Even in that source the difference was 20 watts. And I refuse to believe that the same body position with the only difference being arms on hoods vs arms on drops results in 20 watts. Yeah sure, if you've got straight or almost straight arms on the drops and your body is more upright then that might be the case. But not with your body being in the same position as with aero hoods.Steve Curtis wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 7:20 pmspartacus wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 3:31 pmWhat a claim, I have 3 road bikes with power meters and there's no 30w difference between that position and the drops. That aero coach thing a few posts up also has some data regarding the aero hoods vs drops etc.
This is what I think too. I have 36cm bars and if I tuck low in the drops I am as low or lower than on the hoods except more comfortable and my forearms are behind the bars and shifters. The power meter shows the same approximate effort in both positions as far as I can tell. 20-30 watts is a pipe dream, but, everyone is built a little different.Lina wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 11:02 pmEven in that source the difference was 20 watts. Interestingly when Remco Ennepoel rode away from everyone at worlds he spent a lot of time in the drops, but sometimes also used the aero hoods.
I'm riding my hobby horse again, but...
Also interesting is that Remco used shallow (Roval Alpinist) wheels for the WC win, given most of the field stuck to regular deep wheels on that day.spartacus wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 3:31 pm

I bet it came down to him being a protected rider with the idea that Mt Pleasure was to be decisive.frostorama wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 3:03 pmAlso interesting is that Remco used shallow (Roval Alpinist) wheels for the WC win, given most of the field stuck to regular deep wheels on that day.spartacus wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 3:31 pm
