So don’t buy them. No one is forcing you to buy them.

Nor will I. Not because of the price. I prefer Veloflex which just happen to be €62.

But expecting to be able to but top drawer kit for peanuts is unreasonable. Crappy products at inflated prices is wrong, but top end stuff at proper prices is fair.

No-one is expecting to buy top drawer kit for peanuts. But asking almost £100 for a factory made vulcanized tyre is getting silly.

By comparison I just put a 255/35 R19 Conti SportContact 7 on my for £160. I'll see around 15k miles out of that.

Grand Prix's always release at full retail and then get heavily discounted after the initial demand is filled.

And you can already find them heavily discounted, right after the release.

That's great because I'm going to try those next. I really liked the 5000TL.

This NYtimes article is exactly what we have seen happening in cycling: “premiumization” - $5000+ framesets, $4000 groupsets, $2500 wheels.

The problem is that the tubeless version of GP5000 are for some reason x2 the cost of the tubed ones, which are already not cheap. Do any of you think it costs them twice as much to make? They don't have an airproof lining any longer, relying on your sealant to make them airtight - so other than a bit of extra rubber in the sidewalls...?

GP5000 S TR are good tyres, but partly thanks to BRR's leaderboard (and their tests giving an advantage to tubeless tyres), partly thanks to marketing, they're almost worshipped by some.

The R&D for the tube type GP5000 must be way way lower than the amount they need to recoup for the GP5000 TR. It’s not like they just have to tweak the design. The bead has to be much more accurately produced to allow fitment to be tubeless compatible. The first generation showed what happens if that isn’t the case.

Finally, they aren’t double the cost. The tubed variety have a retail price of £66, the current TR is £75 and the new AS is £85. The disparity in price you see is between full RRP on a new item compared to a heavily discounted product that has been available for a couple of years.

I always read NYtimes articles in Safari private mode. I always get the ad supported version which is fine.

14 pages of a thread that can be summarized as follows:

Introduction to Economics - 101 - Supply and demand.

I.e. not enough people are done with these absurd prices or else the prices would be lower. You're welcome.
