UCI would never detect a motor in a bike like that...so ugly you'd have to sprint like Cav just to keep from hurting fans' eyes

The Afghan womens road championship took place yeserday near Aigle.
The UCI were active in getting the riders out of the country (with others) after the mujahideen took over, and in supporting the riders in switzerland. For once, something nice to say about the UCI.

And first and second place signed to pro contracts by Sylvan Adams women's team. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/afghan ... tour-team/ Hell of a roller coaster ride for those ladies the last couple of years. Relatively speaking, doing pretty damn well now.

The Taliban are in control in Afghanistan, not the mujahideen.

Yes, sorry.
(I'm old enough to remember when the mujahideen fought the Soviets in the 1980s, and apparently senile enough to prove it)

This will make many of you happy; per Cycling News, Cofidis officially announed it is switching to Look bicycles. Without cited support, CN reports that Arkéa-Samsic is switching to Bianchi and (as speculated here) B&B Hotels-KTM is switching to BMC.

Froome’s VO2max right now is ~72mL/kg/min

Even though performance is the sum of all parts, that seems borderline for a world class endurance athlete. Supposedly in his peak condition, that value was in the mid 80s.

That is a curiously low score give he was apparently 84.4 at the GSK lab test in 2015 and closer to 88 during the 2015 TdF

There is widespread debate about how trainable VO2Max actually is, but 72 isn't a TdF winning figure. Strange for someone to suffer such a drop off given they are still competing at a ProTour level.

Certainly adds to the smoke around Froome's inconsistent physiology.

You'll notice that's there not an Osymmetric chainring on that SRM ergometer. That explains it!

On a serious note, it is curious. I recall reading once about Indurain doing a VO2 max test years into his retirement and, while it wasn't near what it was when he was competing, it was pretty high considering his low levels of activity in retirement. Indurain seems more active on the bike these days doing gran fondos and the like and I think this retirement VO2 max test was prior to this phase of his retirement.

72 is high, but about what good Cat 1 racers are at here.

I mean, shit, if I weighed 70kg now, mine would be 69.8. Just seems really low for a WT guy who has dominated in his career.

I'd kill for my VO2 Max to be 72. It wasn't even that when I was running and riding pre covid, but I agree that is low for a WT rider as I think most of them are mid 80's.

Even good 1st cat racers don't have a VO2Max of 72, such a value is elite level!

Mine was 79 in college as a runner. I was never considered particularly “elite.” At the time, I could run a mile in around 4:10. Which is good, but not professional-level.
