I don't think it will be too long before they're pulled - it's such a visible crime, and the stuff is distinctive. False plates won't help them, but they're not too bright - that's why they're doing it......

One of the other common crimes in London is nicking mopeds and small/commuter motorbikes.
Small, agile, quick in traffic, easy to steal, can carry two. Ideal for stealing mobile phones, get away vehicle after a robbery, running drugs. And now, stealing high end bikes.

False plates? They could just ride around with no plates, unless they are right under the nose of the nearest police officer, or seriously assault/murder someone, there's very little the police have the resource to do.

Technically they work every time they come in contact with a connected device running ios.

However, after a relatively small amount of time they will ping the thief's telephone to tell them there is an airtag following them that is not associated with their device. If that is not responded to the device itself will actually start making a noise. This is to stop people tracking others by clandestinely putting an airtag on their person / possessions.

Better than nothing I guess but a very short window in which to act.

I use one like this and a second hidden one, works really well, one of the bikes is regularly not with me and every time an iOS 15 user passes close to it Find My refreshes the location.

Two scrotes sharing a scooter or motorbike is a suspicious thing to see in London. They prefer to have a scooter each. When they share one it may be so that the passenger can rob people. Another identifier is that they don't wear proper motorbike clothes. Sometimes no helmet. I've seen them a few times in the traffic - their movements are also suspicious, looking around very actively in case there are police nearby, and checking out other people's phones, scooters, motorbikes etc. To protect yourself you can go somewhere the scooter can't, e.g. up a high kerb or behind trees or a wall. Also go where other people are, get off and start calling the police. In Italy few years back it was starting to become common on hidden roads, never city centre.
Usually east europeans with van or something similar waiting on roads used by local cyclists.
It's depressing to read about a big city like London having this kind of shit show.

We are actually not that far removed these days. Given the recent adoption of the open carry law in Texas, thieves like those in London are just as likley to be shot by a cyclist.

I'm building his new bike tomorrow, and he's in good spirits about it all.

Have a few years old CAAD for a training bike, mechanically prefect but looks a bit rubbish. Save the nice bike for races and sportives. They are going for the shiny expensive stuff for $10k. Sad that it's come to that to protect yourself.
