Finally getting a chance to travel to Netherlands for a short 1 week work trip. I really wish to bike there, will not be able to travel with mine.

Should I consider renting a bike or buying a cheapish rim brake and then sell on the way back? Both seem to come out to around same price.
Renting would be a better bike but 200-300 eur for 2 days seem to be quite high. Anyone know of any cheaper way of renting a working road bike?

I'm from Utrecht, but obviously never rented a road bike there.

You should be able to rent a bike via these addresses. They are based from the town I live 20km outside Utrecht (no affiliations), and I know they deliver their bikes to the shops listed on this site; so it probably be best to reserve one a.s.a.p. so it's ready for you. Costs you may expect for a quality bike should be around €50-75/day, €100-150/weekend or €150-225/week plus a €250 or so deposit which you'll get back.

- https://www.wiel-rent.nl/nl/huren/racef ... n/utrecht/ (it's the company behind the one listed above I guess)

Note: It's uncommon to rent a road bike in The Netherlands as pretty much everyone already owns at least 1 or 2 bikes. If you randomly try your luck, you'll probably end up empty handed
Note2: You might also consider renting a mountainbike near Amerongen/Leersum/Austerlitz as the 'Heuvelrug' is a great area for both mountainbiking as well as road cycling. This is more common as not every Dutchy owns a mtb. You should be able to find multiple along one of the 3(-5?) mtb routes: https://outlineoutdoor.nl/mountainbike-verhuur/

If you need a nice route send me a pm with some preferences and I'll make one in Komoot.

The Heuvelrug does require a permit to access those trails. It helps keeping tje trails in shape.

When I visited San Francisco earlier this year I was able to rent a road bike from the local Trek store. There is one in Utrecht as well, maybe they offer something similar?

It's a great area to enjoy Dutch road cycling! The heuvelrug area offers some minor hills in the woods, and just to the south you can cycle along the river and through typical small towns.

Aren't the permits included with the rental bike in case you rent a mountainbike? That was the case last time I did (3 years ago or so).

It costs €7,50 and is valid for a year, so no biggie and you directly support the trailbuilders. No need for permits anywhere when you're roadcycling.

I have no idea but it would certainly make sense :)! I'm on the road exclusively.
