Hello All

I ride a road bike. I bought a pair of winter cycling pants,Italian brand. In size L.(185cm/81kg-hip:99cm, waist 88cm) (I also wear this size in the summer, so I bought it in size L.) It's comfortable, it fits nicely, it's not too tight, but it fits snugly, I also like the compression effect.. The manufacturer recommends this for -5 and 5 degrees. But I find that the material is very breathable. I rode in it for 1 hour at 4 degrees. I'm not cold in it, but it occurred to me, wouldn't it be a better choice to go one size larger, which is perhaps a little looser but still fitting. Wouldn't this mean better insulation and a warmer effect? What I mean here is that the material stretches less on the body, making it less breathable. What are your experiences?

I don't think the lycra would be any warmer if it was looser. What you really need in colder temperatures is some wind blocking material at least in some parts of the tights. In my experience at around 5 degrees C partial wind block is enough. If you are planning to ride in colder temperatures, it is best to have the whole front part made of gore infinium or similar material.

Always buy the correct size for you. If you want to increase warmth there are three options, 1 - some brands produce warmer variations. 2 - use a tall ski sock and knee warmers, or leg warmers under the bibs. You now have a double layer on your legs that will keep you comfortable below freezing if needed. And 3 - move to someplace where it doesn't get so cold. :D

I don't even like to ride when it is 50 degrees. Riding in 4 degrees is unfathomable to me. I am extremely impressed by your commitment. I think I would be wearing 2 pairs of bibs at the same time!

That’s in Celsius/Centigrade.

Or, 39.2 degrees F.
