What the fυck? I'm new to this forum but I wouldn't have thought of weight-weenieism and commuting as going together. What is the point of this?

You might be surprised what people are using to ride to work. I've used my Calfee many times. Then again, my commute is 82 km round trip, so weight-weenieism is foremost in my mind for this ride.

So it is inconceivable that a person that has a race bike also commutes by bicycle? And impossible that someone who commutes by bicycle lusts after a lightweight race machine?

I ride my 12 lb neil pryde bura sl for my commute. It actually gets treated as a training ride (technically 2 of them). 34-36 miles round trip with hills. Email and usb flash drives mean nothing extra to carry, especially when I can leave clothing at work and have a shower.

Yup. My commuter bike is in fact a fully rigid MTB with skinny (1.1" Michelin Wild Run'R) 26" slicks. 1x10 gearing, V brakes and 13.75lbs.

Good idea ... ww-ism and commuting go together like porridge and honey

The time-poor taxpayers among us appreciate that the 1-1.5hours spent each day commuting is valuable and want to enjoy it a bit more on a decent rig ... other benefits:

- sweat less on a better bike
- can train before / after work / at lunch as per normal
- can monster all and sundry on the roads at a time of one's choosing
- saves time/room/money commuting on a bike and then riding on it at the weekend .. high utilisation and good VFM

I will not commute on anything over 7kg and likewise I'll almost always commute on tubs ... I can feel a Commuting Tub Club thread coming on ...

Not to brag or nuthin, but this is my commuter-

http://bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?year=1999&brand=Giant&model=Farrago+DS

My Grandpa bought this bike when he turned 75 as he didn't like the Bike E recumbent, and obviously comfort was the #1 goal. I'll have to throw it on the scale, but I would be surprised if this is under 18kg. My commute is only 10 miles each way, I don't worry about someone stealing it, and I give myself plenty of time to get to work. I used to ride a fixie with 48/16 gearing, but that always turned race mode on in my brain. Now I cruise down the parkway in "style" and have my mind blown when I hop on one of my "real" bikes.

If the first bike pic/link of "The New Commuting forum" is anything to go by maybe this isn't such a good idea.

First impressions don't last forever.
