Having an argument with a guy who is saying that squishy carbon rims are normal.
Wheels in question:

Please tell me I'm not crazy in saying these are defective. He keeps saying it's normal any every carbon rim he's dealt with has this squish.

Yes it could happen on some fat, deep and light weight rims, but the example in the link is overly squishy. I have seen the same problem on Vision 45SL and it was accepted as defect by the dealer. I'd say warranty it in your case.

There was a wheel like this on a Francis Cade YouTube video recently. Worth looking at it probably.

Yea, I get that carbon flexes. This isn't flex. He's barely applying pressure and the rim bends like a sheet of paper. It's crazy the amount of people that think this is normal over there.
I actually linked that Framcis Cade video because that was my first thought. I tried all of my wheels and none of them had any squish like this. Even my super light Craft wheels. So the argument that light carbon wheels do this is hilarious.

Ask the "guy" to post a video of himself "squishing" his own carbon rims like that. They all give a bit, so do most bike frames, but that is an extreme outlier. The tire bed could probably be laterally displaced from the rest of the wheel under load.
Something to think about though - just exactly how rigid does the fairing part of the rim need to be for good performance and safety? Is some flex desireable?

nevermind, just checked my 5x current wheelsets none of them do this. must have been on my previous deeper wheels in the 62-85mm range. none of my 30/40/50/55's do this at all and they are way lighter than anything winspace makes
I still think the video is suspicious but not all rims have variable thickness in between the spokes.theyoungconnoisseur wrote:nevermind, just checked my 5x current wheelsets none of them do this. must have been on my previous deeper wheels in the 62-85mm range. none of my 30/40/50/55's do this at all and they are way lighter than anything winspace makes
Slightly off topic what is way lighter than 445g for a 50mm rim?

My Craft wheels are 1,180g. So around 240g lighter than the comparable Winspace set (they quote 1,421g). They don't squish when pressed. Neither do my Farsports 58 depth that weigh 1,300g.C36 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 6:41 pmI still think the video is suspicious but not all rims have variable thickness in between the spokes.theyoungconnoisseur wrote:nevermind, just checked my 5x current wheelsets none of them do this. must have been on my previous deeper wheels in the 62-85mm range. none of my 30/40/50/55's do this at all and they are way lighter than anything winspace makes
