Trying to decide what will be my next wheelset and narrowed it down to Campy Bora WTO or Mavic Cosmic SLR, both of which I'm undecided between 45 or 60mm depth.

The bike they will sit on is a Look 795. Both Campy and Mavic makes sense to me. Mavic because it's a French brand like the frame, and Campy because my 795 groupset is Campy EPS.

I'm undecided between 45 and 60 mil, but more inclined to the last, even if I'm a bit afraid of the accelaration lag and sidewind susceptibility that such a depth can introduce in the system. On the other hand I'm using Zipp's 303s now and the weight difference between those and any of the other two is irrelevant - or so I think - concerning acceleration alone.

I like the fact that the spokes don't touch each other (on the crossing patern), in Campy wheels. That's a big plus for an hassle free wheelset concerning the anoying creeks that sometimes come with spokes rubing on a wheel.

Mavic had some issues a few years back but seems to me that they did overcome them and newer wheels makes justice to the old Mavic glory.

Which one would you choose?

Though one!

I have Bora WTO 45's in my 795. And that looks just about right. 60's are maybe a bit too much. But that is personal.

I like the Campy wheels and I also like the new Mavic wheels. The SLR weigh less I think. Or are you thinking of Bora Ultra's? The Bora's just look awesome! So, if weight doesn't matter I would go for the Bora's. And both in 45.

Curiously I'm finding my Zipp's 45mm profile a bit on the short side, hence thinking on the 60s.

I've also considered a mix 45 front 60 rear just for sake of sidewind safety, but buying each wheel separately will be more expensive than buying a wheelset.

And I'm with you! Yes, it's a though one :D

Look, it's simple.

45mm wheels are great all rounders, responsive, reasonably light and great in cross winds. 45mm-50mm is the go to road bike wheel depth for a reason, it retains the capability and feel of a road bike and provides free speed.

60mm depth is a bit more specialist. A bit heavier, less responsive certainly and more of a pain in cross winds. Yes you will get 3-4w free speed, great on the flats, but the price you pay IMHO is that your road bike rides more of a tt bike. I would not ride 60mm in the high mountains with unpredictable wind conditions, but 45mm is fine on most days.

I have 2 bikes so no issues for me. :D if you have one bike choose carefully and know the limitations of 60mm.

I'm at my wits end with my enve 4.5's and CLX50s in the wind. If wind is a concern at all, I would go smaller. There is absolutely no way I would go larger if wind is on your mind.

What "wind" means to you is very personal.

I experience 20mph+ gusting winds almost daily in the afternoon. Wheels of this depth in these winds can be scary af and full of surprises at speed. On rare days without wind the depth is great but so far I've not found any wheels in the 45+ depth that are truly stable and confidence inspiring in my windy conditions. Anticipating the unexpected makes me slower overall.

The mental fatigue of always being on edge to prepare for the next gust that might blow you into traffic or off the road is a real thing.

How are is the braking performance of these two wheels? I'm also debating between the two, but for the WTO 45 and SLR in 40.

Well I've been really happy with braking on my Bora Ultras pre-AC3 and since AC3 should further improve braking I don't have any doubt it will be excelent. I am waiting for my WTO 45s to arrive in next weeks.

I have a set of Cosmic SLR 40 Rim Brake and 2 sets of Bora Ultra 50 AC3 and Bora One 50 AC3 tubular ( so basically tubless-clincher-tubular)

Cosmic SLR is nice; but Bora just look more premium. I am thinking of selling the SLR40 to get some Bora WTO.

Regarding braking, I would say there is not a big difference in dry(no rain with the Mavic until now) , maybe Campy is 5% better in modulation .
