I'm considering options to upgrade my wheelset on my BMC Roadmachine 02 (2017).
Currently running a pair of Novatec 30 Aluminium Clinchers Disk (stock) which are showing some signs of wear.
These are Full 30mm deep alloy rims with 24mm External, 20mm Internal rim width.
Tubeless Ready, 20 spokes front, 24 spokes rear, Stainless J-Bend Spokes, Fitted with Shimano/SRAM cassette body. Alloy nipples
1,900 grams/pair.
These sit on Vitoria Corsa 30mm tyres.
I haven't got a huge budget, so I'm considering a pair of DT Swiss E 1800 Spline 32 Disc Road, which are currently £219 reduced from £379 on Merlin. I'd only save around 90g of weight, but they're 32mm deep and I think have superior hubs?
Or DT Swiss ER 1600 Spline 32 Disc Road at £329?
Questions: Are these a worthy upgrade from the stock Novetecs, or should I aim higher and go for something better, maybe Carbon for a noticeable difference?
Considering going tubeless too? What ya reckon?
This is what's available right now:

Any advice appreciated!

If there isn't anything wrong with the current wheels I'd go for some better tyres and tubes. You say the current wheels are worn, but what's wrong with them?
90g won't make a difference, but I'd image 300g from tyres and tubes would, plus improved rolling resistance.

Theres a couple of knocks to the outside rim, and some of the nipples are missing half of their shell.
I'll try post photos.
Rolling resistance is pretty minimal on the Vittorias and I need the 30's on to deal with the crappy roads here in Sussex!
I'm just keen to try something better as I know these wheels are not on par with the frame. Not overly worried about weight saving, just nicer hubs and better looking/ sounding.
I also want the option to use my existing ones as Winter/ Rain and get something nippier for Summer. About to hit some Sportives this year too, so I'm keen to upgrade.

Why don't you save up to get a pair of carbon wheels from VEL, or Prime (Wiggle)? They are on sale from time to time and should come in at 1,500g, or less.
Then you'll really notice the difference and consider it money well spent.
You can still use the old wheels in crappy weather.

I'd definitely save some more cash up and go for something a bit more special where you will feel more of a difference

So I'd be looking at something like these Prime Doyenne 44s?

Or maybe the 50mm?

Also consider winspace carbon wheels if your budget allows. For example, they have a 60mm deep carbon wheelset weighing in at 1621g for US$798: https://www.winspace.cc/product/lun-roa ... -wheelset/
Not only would you be saving weight from your currrent wheelset, but the deeper profile should make it easier to hold speed. I bought some winspace rim brake wheels last year and have been very happy with them. There's a 79-page thread on Winspace Wheels on the WW Wheel Forum: viewtopic.php?p=1793229#p1793229
Overall, the consensus seems to be that Winspace make quality wheels, and they provide great value for money compared to the big name brands.

They look nice! What's the shipping like to the UK? Was slightly apprehensive about deep rims due to the climbs and cross winds, so was thinking 50mm max? What's the thoughts on this?njleach wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 9:45 amAlso consider winspace carbon wheels if your budget allows. These look decent value for 1580g - https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Vel/38 ... elset/QS23
Yeah, I've got Enve 3.4 which are a similar depth, if it's mega windy you might get the odd sidewind bumping you around but nothing I'd worry about really.bmcman wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 3:52 pmI like how the front/back rim size differs on these!Broady wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 12:13 pmThese look decent value for 1580g - https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Vel/38 ... elset/QS23
Would 50mm rims cause me problems on windy days?
I'd try and go with a bigger upgrade. HUNT has open box deals that are pretty good sometimes, Prime has some decent 50mm carbon wheels, and I've had good luck with Light Bicycle (the Bitex hubs are fine) and even iCan wheels.
I'd also second the better tires and tubes.....some Continental GP5000's and latex tubes would be a huge improvement.

Not the regular GP5000's but they have the GP5000S-TR's that are tubeless and get ridden in the pro peleton.bmcman wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 5:52 pmNice!
