The variation in tyre weights between same size, compared to spec, is way more than 3grams. I doubt that's extra weight in the bead, so if more rubber is in the sidewall and tread, then logically it will have more rolling resistance as well.

I've only got a sample size of 2 on the S-TR, but I've got a lot of experiance with the regular GP5K and all of my samples were between 218g and 223g (listed 220g) so not a ton of variability in the tubed version. I'd assume similar small variations in the tubeless version.
2015 Wilier Zero.7 Rim - 6.37kg
2020 Trek Emonda SLR-7 Disc - 6.86kg
2023 Specialized SL7 - 7.18kg

I'll weigh a few of my spares when I get home, from memory it's a bit more than that.

A few grams don't matter to me. But a few watts do. Seems to be the case for everyone who says to just go with S TR based on the faster of two tests

25/622 s tr
267g
294g (yes, checked and rechecked)

28/622 TT TR
244g
257g

I'm happy you all only have a few g difference. Mine indicate their QC is a joke. I'm buying mine in store with scales from now on, if I buy any more, to do their job for them.

I looked through my tires from various brands and got a decent amount of variance.

GP5000 TL 28: 289g, 296g
GP5000 S TR 28: 278g, 287g
Vittoria Corsa Pro 28: 267g, 268g, 274g
Challenge Criterium RS 27: 250g, 262g

From your photo, that's clearly a GP5000 TL, not S TR.

Yep, the 27 gram difference is explained by the fact that the poster is weighing 2 different types of tyre.

I'd be more concerned about buying the right thing in the store, not weighing them.

Thanks for your uppity vote of confidence, but yes I noted it also, however that is how it was received from unnamed retailer in s tr packaging and I'm not cutting it open just for you campag riding philistines. But you are almost certainly right that it will explain the large weight difference.

If this is true, then I’m never buying from Merlin again and citing this post. The only realistic way this could have happened is if they accepted a return after a customer pulled a switcheroo.

You don’t need to cut it open…it’s clearly got different branding, a different bead shape, a noticeably thinner sidewall and thicker tread…plus the major weight difference and likely a 4-digit date code. You say you checked and rechecked, but all signs point to this being a TL, so why even bother posting unless you didn’t even notice?

No it wasn't Merlin, those were the two before. This pair is from a well known online store here in Aus.

I really can't and didn't want to believe it. It's so dumb it can only be unintentional. Surely.

Edit: I didn't notice it was a diff tyre previously and only noticed when I weighed them again yesterday. It's not my MO to invite ridicule on myself.

If this is true, then the S TR is a downgrade from the TL!

S TR is supposed to be 50g lighter according to Conti. BRR measured them as 40g different im 25mm size. But you have a TL that is just 2g more than an S TR, wirh much better puncture protection.

In real-world usage, the TLs were virtually unusable here because the sidewalls would always suffer vertical tears. S TRs have a triple-layer sidewall. Center tread punctures seal more easily, so I’m fine with the change in construction.

I just went back again and found my Corsa Pro 32. 292g and 213g, the biggest gap so far. And I bought them from the same retailer at the same time, so unlikely to be manufactured that far apart. I don't have the boxes to compare. But I did just buy some more Corsa Pro 28s and 30s, as well as another set of Criterium RS in 27. Will be weighing all tonight for science.
