BMC Teammachine SR01 Frame Up Build

Fistr off, thanks for facilitating this forum whoever is involved. Secondly, thanks to all the members who have contributed - I have been lurking and reading for a month or two and am finaly ready to post. I have moved back to an urban area and decided to build out a carbon bike for tooling around the city but mostly for cross training for my tennis habit. I have always owned steel frames and was honestly headed down that or the titanium path, however, after talking to lots of folks I was convinced look hard at a full carbon build. Initially I figured I would just buy a $3k bike and see how I felt about it but the nerd in me took over and I decided to start looking for a good deal on a frame. I checked out Cervelo, Colnago, Pinarello, Bianchi, BMC, Orbea, Felt, Canyon, Focus, Wilier and a few others. I realized quickly that there was the lower end $3k-5k bikes and then a big jump to $10k plus (which would not be a real option to start). So of course (as I did with my steel frames) I decided to be a dummy and buy a frame and build out a bike. I realize this never saves money (really not that much) but I figued it would be a good experience and learning lesson and I coudld personalize it - which is a huge part of the fun! I was after a Wilier Zero but could not find one (still would be into it if I do see one). After weeks, I found a 2023 BMC Teammachine SR01 LTD frame for $1k, so I snatched that up with the zeal of a fiend on payday! What i failed to notice was it was JUST the frame! So now i am starting from total scratch. I sourced a seatpost and clamp, now I am about to order some handle bars and a fork. As the fork I tracked down is a different color, I think I am going to just paint the whole frame some cool colorway - sticking to the typical layout of the Teammachine currently but perhaps with new colors. So, thats where I am - I'll post pics as I go and ask lots of seemingly dumb and obvious questions along the way. If you bear with me, I think it will be a fun experiment! Cheers!

So I went and had a professional fit done - very informative. First cross road however. He suggested I have a 100mm stem with 420mm wide bars. The bike is designed to work with integrated cockpits - so o found a 420mm with 130mm stem in regular round for $320 USD. They do not make aero bars that are any wider than 360mm, but they have them in 100mm stems. Is 30mm difference in stem on a 61 cm frame significant? I'm 6'3" by the way.

What width bars are you running now and have you ever tried narrower bars? I'm 6'3" also (189cm) and my bikes always came with 44s. Over the years I went to 42, then 40, now I'm on 38s, with my levers around 36.5cm. Unless you have massive shoulders, I think you'd be fine with narrow bars. It might take some time getting used to it but I just test rode a bike the other day with the stock 44 wide bars and they felt incredibly uncomfortable. I think 30mm difference in stem length is going to be way, way more noticeable than 30mm difference in width. I feel like you can make the bar width work for you with a little wiggle room. 30mm of stem length isn't something you want to try to make work if it doesn't fit.

Ask your fitter. He should follow up this questions. If you don't ask/follow up, it's basically a waste of money.

30mm is a massive difference in terms of fit. I'd avoid full integrated cockpits unless you're super confident with your fit and how it rides.

You can build the BMC up with a semi-integrated cockpit for less $$, it will still give you the majority of the aero benefits, is easier to maintain and change. The trade off is that they're slightly heavier. I've got an SLR01 with this setup.

The main thing you need is a BMC ISC2 stem, most bars (not all) are then compatible.

Yeah, I realized that 30mm was a bit much. Went to the local shop i will say 36cm bars are TINY! I am not full on racing yet, so no need for that - yet. So I could get these

Still be all internal. Am I thinking about this correctly? I also found some bars on Craigslist in my exact size - but its a integrated system.

Fork should be here this week. Once I recieve the fork, seatpost and handlebars I am going to send them to get painted. Next up will be the drive train and wheels. I am thinking SRAM Force as that is what my steel bike has - though mechanical. The electronic wireless shifting is all new to me, so a bit of a blank slate. Anyone have an argument for one over the other? I have hear SRAM has better gearing for hills? There are certainly hills in Oregon to deal with! I am inclined to think top of the line (Red/Dura-Ace, Campy) might only be of realy value if you are competing? Don't get me wrong, I understand the cost of something isn't tied to its value per se. I just think in this case, would I really notice a difference between Red vs Force? I have never ridden Campy but several folks have told me they did not like their electronic system.

That's the Aero version for the Time Machine but think it should fit - seem to remember there was a user on here who had done it, have a search for it. If you do go down this option be aware that the bar diameter is smaller than standard so you have to use the BMC bars as well.

100mm carbon bars 42mm at drops have been orderded, as well as a red fork. I think I might custom paint it! Any thoughts on price? Black Magic said around $300 for 1 color. Figure less than $1k?
