For a shift cable you can just epoxy the holder on, no rivets needed. The epoxy will hold something like 300kg / cm² which you will never reach with shift cables.
Can this method be used to add external cable stops without drilling extra holes?

Definitely.

I even used it for a brake cable stop - which is something I would NOT recommend, but it's been holding up fine for me.

Sorry for the late respons.
The bike kinda exists but is just laying around in parts since a long time and will do so even for longer i guess.
I have got some illness, have been in the hospital for quite some time for the third time now and will need time to recover.
Haven´t even worked for over a year right now...
Long story short, i do not give any of energy to my bicycles or things like that.
Hope you understand that this thread is kinda dead right now.
