Hi,

That's right... this is a build post for anooooother supersix. But a little different.
The base frameset is a Cannondale supersix evo hm from 2012. And complete build aims at sub 5kg.
As I'm in China, I want to use as many Chinese lightweight products as possible, and try to keep it "relatively" cheap(which means a lot of second-hand stuff).
The price is in USD.

I'll keep everything updated in this form.
  • frame(w/ derailleur hanger) + seat clamp + fork | supersix | 740g + 17g + 301g | $765

Welcome to the forum thanks for sharing your project.

Love to see super six builds. I'm also interested to see what used parts you find in China.

Spreadsheets are very useful for planning $/g builds so I highly recommend one. There are tons of paths to sub 5k on this platform but doing it to a budget is the hard part.

Maybe take the paint and finishes of the frame and put on a light clear coat that may save some weight

Thanks for the advice! My current budget is under 3.2k USD. I've already found some interesting stuff but just hoping they can survive under my 73kg weight...

I thought about that before, the price I got is around $550, and it almost comes close to the price of the frameset! The weight saving is around 100g+, so I decided just to keep that coat...

I've actually never done a frame up build. I've always bought a built bike and then weighed and sold off parts to get down to frame only which helps see how each part contibutes to overall weight and helps budgeting upgrades. With a frame up build you risk not finding good value $/g without a reference.

To help you out you can copy my google spreadsheet from my Izalco Max build (if you can get the link to work in China) which is a similar platform so that you can compare individual part weights to a reference and see if the $/g is worth it.

On your frame you could get to a bit over 4kg if everything is maxed out ($$$$$$$). Given the maxed out weight is so low it gives you a lot of paths to 5kg that you can use to a budget.

Weight savings from removing cosmetic top layers varies a lot depending on how much paint, primer, and fill are used. Your frame seems comparable to mine with minimal cosmetic layers so you likely wont see more than 40g savings; and likely less. If your frame was glossy white with a color shift sparkle marbled paint job you might save something like 200g. Sanding by hand is possible but takes forever and the slower you go the safer it is and should be researched heavily beforehand. I also wouldn't consider sanding a frame to be an easy or fun task as someone who has done it cheaply without expensive equipment.

You could aim lower. My 5.5 kg build cost around 1000$ and the 4.4 kg around 1800 $ with lots of used and/or damaged parts to repair, although I got the frames at 400 $ and 500 $ respectively.

On my Izalco I used a SSE fork but it was so thinly painted, that I only saved 9 g !!

Looking forward to the build.

I didn't buy my Hi Mod for a WW project but maybe... I will make it a bit lighter. :D The basis is good.

I do have a UNO Kalloy King Stem and a 100 g seatpost in the mail.

Keeping the existing coat seems like a practical choice given the price comparison with the frameset.

i would keep the frame set as is as once you sand it there is no turning back. it looks good with the cannondale logos now. however if you want to save 50-80 grams overall, then sanding is required

So many details in the sheet! That will help me a alot. My current idea is to first finish the build with some standard cheap&light stuff (so that I can ride), and then try to sweep some weight from that, which may at last turn into your method.

Considering the $/g ratio of the sanding paint method is so high, and also I dont want to do it myself( pretty unhealthy I think), the frame will be what it is right now.

After browsing some threads in ww, it seems that the Red 22 is the goto choice if
1. I want a 2x setting;
2. I don't want to charge my bike every time.

So here's the weight of the groupset.
Second-hand. $430

You are welcome.

Make sure to enjoy the process. The journey is more interesting than the destination.

Also with a conventional rim bike its easy to swap stuff and try out tons of things to see what you like and what you don't like provided that you sell on your used parts.
