Finished the build! Sub 6 kilos with a non S-Works frame, not too shabby. I don't have a hanging scale so it's honestly probably over 6kg, but I will just pretend its under 6. Been riding the first iteration of the bike with the Hunts and have been liking it a ton. Got the rims in today and built the wheels up. There really isn't any aspect I can think of upgrading, everything is maxxed out. The Prestacycle cassette shifts decently enough for me not to want to take it off.

Original post below:

After the whole Ventum fiasco, I found what was supposedly an S-Works Tarmac SL7 up on FB Marketplace for a steal of a price.

Image

Unfortunately the seller was looking to do a local sale only and was located a 6 hour drive away. Luckily, I convinced the seller to drop it off at a local bike shop to get packaged up and sent over to me. So I patiently waited...

It arrived a few days later and I quickly got to work stripping it down so I could get rid of the eTap ASAP. There were a ton of paint chips and both the headset and bottom bracket bearings (which turned out to be BBInfinite WS2 coated! Unfortunately the lifetime replacement warranty doesn't apply for second owners :( ) were completely knackered, indicating the rough life this bike had previously. What a crazy thought that people actually ride their bikes. :? :?

Once I got down to the bare frame and fork, I put them on my scale. 851.2g for the frame? 352.8g for the fork? Goddammit. It's definitely not an S-Works. The previous owner had mentioned that it was painted by Squid bikes, who use crappy canned single stage paints from spray.bike. I went ahead and started with some paint thinner on a rag and got to work. Luckily the old finish came off relatively easily and I soon got my answer.

Image

Just as I suspected, its a 2021 non S-Works frameset. Two positives, its the lightest colorway possible and the Squid bikes folks didn't do ANY surface prep before spraying. That meant the original finish was actually in pretty good condition. Two hours later it was completely stripped. It ended up at 809.7g for the frame and 346.8g for the fork. I also brought this fact up with the seller and he gave me a sizeable partial refund which I appreciated. If only Ventum would own up to their mistakes.

Image

Before I recieved the frame, I was planning on getting it custom painted BMW Marina Bay Blue Metallic, but seeing that this wasn't an S-Works frame and the finish underneath was quite presentable, I held off. I spent some of the partial refund on some titanium hardware from betterbolts.com, a lightweight Prestacycle cassette, and some small parts to update the worn/missing items. Overall, I won't be missing out too much weight wise, the financial benefits definitely trump whatever few grams I'd save if it were an S-Works.

Currently waiting for a few parts to come in, but this will be the preliminary build until I get my new wheels built up. The weights with asterisks are unconfirmed (needing a few final parts to come in), using online resources (I love R2 bike), or are not the final weight (e.g. the hoses/steertube requiring cutting still). The final build with the intended wheelset and seatpost should be ~570g lighter, although the first iteration is nothing to sneeze at either.

This is going to be a much better bike than that Ventum. What spider are you going to use on that crankset to get the weight to 568g? I'm guessing not a PM spider.

Those Cannondale rings must be really light. My setup weighted 618g. Quarq Dzero (125g) + SRAM Red 165mm DUB (333g) + Praxis Buzz (129g) + Bolts (31g)

@robbosman think of those burglars in action movies trying to escape a bank robbery with painted stolen cars ;)...

Yeah they run ~103g with bolts. You should replace your bolts, alloy chainring bolts run around 10g for the set.

Huge improvement from when you got it. Did you hit the 6.6kg projected weight?

Thanks for the tip about the bolts. I just saved 20g using some alloy bolts I already had. Never realized that the ones that came with the Quarq spider were steel.

Build is still in process, waiting on rims. It should be under 6.6 right now still sitting on the Hunt wheels. I don't have a hanging scale though.

Building straight pull double butted round spokes is so tiring.
