3T Strada sub 6kg goal with cable disc and mechanical shifting

Was nearly ready to finish it up but wanted to do a couple of more mods to reduce a little bit more weight since the Metron bars added so much. First, I thought I'd go ahead and try to make a lighter steerer plug since the ACR plug was just a tad heavy at 24 grams. The challenge was to make one that passes a brake cable. I ended up 3D printing a three spoke design which turned out to be both light and strong enough. I tested it with a sacrificial piece and it held up to 8 Nm of torque using the stock M6 bolt. That's many times more compression than needed to preload a headset. At 9Nm, the ABS part started to shear and compress. The complete assembly weighs 6 grams which I think was worth the effort. Additional parts needed were a carbon tube and an aluminum recessed nut for mounting brake calipers. The carbon tube was epoxied into the top of the steerer to act as a retainer for the ABS plug.
The other mod was just an incremental improvement of the 3T Charlie seatpost hack. My initial mod used a stainless steel tube for anchoring the yoke bolts. dlj2119 suggested using a carbon tube which ended up saving an additional 5 grams making the complete modded Charlie seatpost weigh 123.6g.
So the build is complete for now and in its current state, it's slightly above 6kg because of going semi-integrated with the heavier Metron 5D ACR. I had a chance of staying below 6kg if I used a lighter aero bar or bar/stem combo such as the ProVibe Aero Superlight or the Black Inc integrated bar but ultimately, using the Metron bar resulted in a more unique and perhaps more aero build.

Nice looking setup with some well thought out cable routing, super clean front end!
What chainring are you running?
All the best with it

Simply beautiful!! Well Done!
What gearing did you settle on front and back?

Looks so nice with that wiring

Thanks cerro, Osoi3900, gSporco, appreciate the positive comments.
Forgot to mention I did update the chainring/cassette. I initially set it up with Fibrelyte 40t and 3t bailout cassette but was not excited about the spacing and 9t high gear so I decided to go to 11. Now on Fibrelyte 50t chainring and xg-1190 11/32 with a bit of weight loss and much tighter gear ratios. Probably more appropriate for an aero bike.

Damn! I feel weak... hows climbing with a 50-32? J think that would fry my leggstakolino wrote: ↑Sun Nov 29, 2020 10:22 pmThanks cerro, Osoi3900, gSporco, appreciate the positive comments.

Guys, you're right. It wasn't my first choice. I would have liked an 11-36 but my other requirements were 11speed, light weight, tight spacing in the higher gears and 11t/shimano freehub compatible. Didn't find one. I also considered Sroad 10-36 and 46t chainring but I opted for the XG-1190.
Icantaffordcycling, where in the bay area are you? What are your favorite climbs? I'm on the Peninsula and it will be fine (gulp) for my typical short rides around here which includes some decent climbing, like OLH, Kings, Pagemill etc.

nice custom mods!
Typically do Montebello or hwy 9 if I want to stay local but end up doing all that stuff around portola valley during the weekends.
Maybe I'm in horrible shape right now but 50x32 sounds brutal. I just setup my bike with the same setup and I'll report back with how it feels. I do tend to spin in the saddle instead of grinding.

Yeah that's a brutal gear ratio there. Agree with icantaffordcycling.... I also bike OLH, Page Mill, King's, Montebello and can't imagine doing them on a 50x32. Admittedly I'm also more of a spinner, but to give you an idea, I'm doing the same roads on a 40x32!takolino wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 1:49 amGuys, you're right. It wasn't my first choice. Alright, guys. I'm gonna share my experience with 50x32 since it's not entirely off topic. It all started around page 7 (easyv, you were there) near the bottom where I talked about my Chainring and cassette conundrum. If this isn't relevant, skip this post.
Anyway, my regular road bikes have 11-25 with 50/34 and this suites me for all my riding. I'm not a huge distance guy or a climbing fiend but I like to do the coastal loop occasionally, coming back on Tunitas. TBH, I'll be on 34x25 most of the climbs. I'm pretty comfortable on that gear going up OLH, Pagemill and Tunitas. I'm fairly light weight for my age and height, hovering in the mid 150 lbs so that helps too. So, when I considered 50x32, I felt exactly as you guys. No way! I imagined walking up OLH before getting to the top. But it's so clean and perfect on the Strada. Efficient, smooth pedalling, good ratios and so on. So I had to give it a go. I swapped the 11-25 cassette for the 11-32 on my regular bike, pretended to not have the small ring and headed up OLH and surprised myself. I didn't die. In fact, my time was on par with my normal and I didn't suffer that much more. I've read that low cadence climbing is a good way to build strength and power. Since then, I've done it a few more times. It's different and feels like your're training harder but it's too early to tell if it's actually making me any faster.
The Strada with the 50t will be for my shorter rides. Should be fine for the OLH/Portola loop and that will be around 30 miles. Would also be good for the flats like Foothill, Junipero Serra, Portola and Canada etc.

My apologies for starting this mess. its more about my gear ratio insecurity than anything else
