I have built a nextie XC wheelset many years ago with good success

I have now come across this extremely light rim.

Compared to the classic offerings in the market this really is very light, the lightest equivalent from ENVE is aournd 350g for example. Is there any experience out there with this rim, or the supreme line in general? They claim to have used some magic material/production tech to bring the weight down further.

Light Bicyle offers a rim as light as this but with slightly different specifications, given its rated to 4.8 bar, this is even more extreme!

25mm internal rim width is more in gravel-territori these days. If you’re riding XC I suggest you rather go for the 30mm interal rims.
From my experience how durable a rim is comes down to how well it handles snake bite on sharp rocks without the rim cracking, not how many PSI/bar it’s rated for. In XC you won’t go above ~35 PSI anyway.

If you are really heavy I suggest you go for a more durable setup.

I'd go for a 30mm rim, as suggested above. Good support for a modern, fast rolling 2.4/62mm tire.

Sure 30mm is great for 2.4 and up size tires, but not everyone needs those wider tires. 25 is still great for 2.2’s

I haven’t seen a 2.2 on a high end bike in years.

I see Nextie has changed the spec for NXT29VM36U.
Now there seems to be some 260g versions as well and the weight limits have changed.

“On date 2024.08.08, we successfully developed a lighter version of Omega 36U, the weight is 260g only. The impact test result reaches 100J.”
Weight: 260g / 280g
Strength: 100J (260g) / 105J (280g) <Pointed Hammer, 25psi>
Max System Weight: 143Kg (260g XC) / 150Kg (280g XC)

Those are some crazy bold claims for the weight limit.

TBH I would never trust a small manufacturer whose goal it is to go as light as possible, on equipment that gets beaten around and abused while mountain biking. It's not road cycling. Where do they get the budget and infrastructure to seriously stress test these things?

Also, one of their wheels exploded on a sponsored rider's bike at the Paris Olympics on the XC course. And for anyone that has seen that course, it was a pretty tame one for XC standards these days. I've been watching the UCI XC World Cup for a couple of seasons and I've never seen this. Tires explode, yeah, but this?

I don't care what their warranty program is, because it won't cover my teeth.

A 250g, 30mm internal rim is crazy. No one could reasonably expect to ride those for very long. It’s hard to find narrow tubular road rims that weigh less than that, let alone wide MTB rims that have to endure off road riding.

I’m a hefty 65kg and my 1300g wheels were built up with 430g, 30mm internal rims. Are they overbuilt for purpose? Sure. But I’ve launched my ZFS-5 off high speed, 1m+ drops into rocky landings without any consequences.

Lightest I’d ever go with a wide rim and current construction materials and methods is ~350g.
