Hi Guys,
I'm pretty new to the MTB scene; been on 15+ years on road bikes only. I've recently got a good deal on this 29" hardtail:

https://www.bmc-switzerland.com/intl_en ... bikes.html

It came with some generic rims with 25mm inner width. I'm looking into upgrading the wheels and I've seen that there's allot more wheels/rims with a 30mm inner width available than 25mm. I've looked at tires from Schwalbe, Conti, Maxxis... etc, all 2.20 - 2.25" width and nowhere does it say, for which rim width they are intended to be used. So for example, would these work on a 30mm?

Sorry for my ignorance with the MTB tires, but with road tires, the manufacturers always specify for which rim width the tires are made for.

Thanks!

it will work perfectly fine on wider rims and the cross king still is quite a popular front tire, despite being on the smaller side. Many pair it with the race king on the rear.

Everything else depends on your liking and intended use. With increasing ids, tires for standard mtb use became more wide. 2.35-2.4" is normal and those blow up to around 60mm on 30mm id. But weight also increases with size. For easy terrain and marathon racing, many still choose lighter and less threaded 2.2-2.25" tires.
I prefer the higher volume though. Allows me to run fast, less knobby tires and still have enough grip.

Thanks for that!
I'm thinking of pulling the plug on a set of these wheels as well:

https://www.dtswiss.com/en/wheels/wheel ... spline-one

They have 30mm inner width, but the rims are hookless (DT swiss does not appear to have a carbon hooked version available at all). Would the 2.20" Conti Cross King work on these? I looked into the specs of the Cross King and also tires from other manufacturers, but none seem to be specified to be compatible with hookless. In the road sceen, when Zipp made hookless wheels, they made a whole table of compatible tires so that you don't buy the wrong ones. DT-Swiis doesn't seem to have that culture...

Thanks again for helping!

Zipp 25mm internal width hookless rim works with 28mm tires up to 76psi. The tolerance for 28mm on 25mm at 76psi is tight, that's why there is a compatibility chart.

Mtb rim with 30mm internal for 2.2-2.4 (56-61mm) tires at 16-28psi is a piece of cake. As long as it's a quality tubeless tires it should work. That's why there's no such chart.
30mm is not that wide for mtb size tire. Some gravel wheels are already 30mm internal.

So, "does it fit and safe" -> Yes.
Does it work well? -> Well that's a bit harder to answer.

Mtb tires aren't completely round. On top of the casing are tread knobs. Tread knobs are designed with assumed casing shape on an assumed rim internal width. Changing rim width can make tire more round or more square. Some tires can become too round if internal width is too narrow or too square if internal width is too wide. Both of which compromise handling feel. But a lot of tires just works well on any rim. And a lot of people have their preference if they like a rounder tire or a more squared tire.
