This was only a precaution after we noticed on Monday that a worm is spreading.
At that time it was not clear which of the recently discovered vulnerabilites (in PHP and/or phpBB) are being used by the worm.
Yesterday it turned out that the so called Santy worm uses "only" a hole in phpBB prior to 2.0.11.
We had updated to to this version already on November 18th (the day it was released), so actually the worm wouldn't have been able to cause any harm.
So, we could have already put the forum back online yesterday, but since there is also a serious vulnerability in PHP prior to 4.3.10 which could be used by a modified worm version, we decided to wait until our hoster had updated to the latest version.
That happened in the meantime, so the forum is now back online.
