Hi guys,

Looking to build a gravel bike and was considering a XT 8000 wheelset, is it possible to use an 11 speed shimano road cassette (105 or Ultegra) on this wheelset?

Cheers

Yea, Shimano in all of their wisdom made 11 speed MTB cassettes by simply offsetting the cogs to work on a normal 10 speed freehub. They of course didn't do that on their road hubs/cassettes. So, you can't put an 11speed road cassette on the MTB wheels easily.

That said, you can use a wheels mfg 11 speed conversion cassette (although that is technically campy spaced to works perfectly) or one of the edco conversion cassettes. I would only do this if you already have the XT wheels or have a strong reason to use them.

Take the top gear cluster to a machinist and have him remove 1.8mm from the inside.

Or you can do the remove-a-cog trick.

Would this hack work to get 10 cogs of 11 speed road onto a normal 10 speed mtb freehub?

I want to splurge out for some nice MTB wheels but want to be able to use them on my CX as well. Mavic Crossmax SL Pro seems like a good option for light weight and modular hub compatability?

Another alternative for the ten speed wheel is to use a Edco Monoblock cassette. It will work on the XT hub and shifts great.
