If Zipp offers him the 303's, no doubt he could get the 202's instead if he asked. But apparently he prefers the 303's even though 202's are considerably lighter. Everyone in here agrees that, lighter is better. Please explain to me, why he would choose 303 over 202.

And yes, I race. We have probably done the same races you and I.

IMHO, it's about rim width. 303s have a wider rim than 202s.

I *think* it's something like 26.X versus 22.X mm, which accounts for much of the 200g difference.

I am pretty certain if zipp started making the 202s as wide as 303s, you would see more 202s than 303s in races.

I'm pretty sure Wout doesn't care about durability, he gets as many wheels, as he wants. And I'm pretty sure as well, that weight trumps stiffness, if it's not too much of a trade off, which it is not. But width could be the reason...

Careful with too wide if you race under UCI rules. 33mm max tyre size is actually measured, not what is printed on the sidewall. They have been known to check here.

TBH, i think it's more of an issue with traditional box section rims, where the spoke bed is almost flat, i've picked up a good pile of mud on the rim before now on older rims. (much older)
Fortunately, no one sells rims like that anymore, they are all *slightly* aero.

Only modern rim issue i've had is when the mud is full of freshly cut grass, but then you tend to have more serious issues than a bit of mud on your rims......

Wout has to care a little about durability. They could break during a race.

A rider of Wout's size and with power like his, stiffness is important and I think 303s provide that extra stiffness compared to 202s.

@mattr:
Tubular rim doesn't really affect tire width.

The OP was asking about clinchers.

Hence the concern about going to wide rims.

Sorry. Didn't see that.
