can't wait for 1x20 where the chain is 2mm wide and breaks constantly and you need a class 4 clean room to service it

can we get 2x12 too?
What they need for fully 12 speed support are
-Update Etap firmware to use rear 12 speed,
-Sprocket and chain (already provided in 1x12 they are going to release anyway)
-make sure the new 1x12 Right shifter is the same ergonomic as other 11 speed Sram shifter (so we can just swap new right shifter into old 2x11 groupset)
-Not sure if new RD needed, 10 speed RD still work for 11 speed groupset as long as they have Exact actuation cable pull ratio.

This is what's great about SRAM. They are always willing to give a go to things some people tries to put together in the basement. Only with their engineering brawn some of those concepts become a product worth being in the market.

Not that this thing will substitute 2x11 or whatever number of cogs we will spin on our rear wheels one day, but it will for sure make sense on some applications.

However, this will probably not make a 2x12 as they might be using the Horizon concept for the derailleur, and that excludes different ring diameters used at once as the chain gap is controlled by the offset between the top pulley centre and the cage shaft.

This makes me wet.

eTap 1x12 with a few different cassette spacings available is the dream. Who knows, maybe within the next few years :P

.........new wheels (hubs for 12 or more cogs) and frames for new axle standar???.....................But first they wait for the disc brakes to be widespread

Do you remember Shimano's 14-speed patent?

I thought they already said it'll need 135mm rear spacing?

I wonder if it will come for rim brakes at all, or mechanical shifting.

on rear: for 12 speed freehub 148x12 boost axle may work better for shifting
on front: no changes needed, but for cheap road disk bikes some companies are already using 2 standards
(15x100 road forks with leftovers of narrow 15x100 niners wheels; and 12x100 as standard for expensive bikes)

about shimano patent:
currently shimano only put ≥34 tooth cogs over spokes, ≤32 tooth cogs accommodate freehub width
using this patent shimano can make wide range road cassettes with ≥12 cogs compatible with old hubs
close range 12 speed cassette may or may not require new hub spacing, it depends 12 speed chain/cogs development results

sram mtb 12 speed development results (11 vs 12): 5.6mm to 5.25mm chain width reduction, 3.8mm to 3.65mm cassette cog spacing reduction
sram road 12 speed development results: may or may not be the same as sram mtb
shimano road 12 speed development results: may or may not be the same as sram road

In a French magazine, there is an article on the fact of mounting cassettes of
12 or more in current systems......Impact on the theme wheels/frames, especially in the construction of the wheels (hub and spokes tension) If I can put a photo later

SRAM has an xd-r freehub, maybe that's the key. Shimano has 12 speed XTR coming so they're probably planning for the road too

The podcast says nothing of an official presentation. It’s basically James blurting out April as a wild guess.

Yes, I am aware that XDR already exists.
