Specialized shoe repair experiences

I have a pair of 2011 Specialized S-Works shoes that I have been using for a bit under 2 years. Love the shoes and fit. However, over the last 6-8 weeks I've had 2 of the BOA dials loose grip and more often than I care to remember they completely loose any tension. PITA!! I went to the specialized site to try to see if they sell these parts only, and they do but are currently out of stick. I remember one of the local guys telling me that he had the same problem a while back and he sent the shoes to specialized to be repaired under warranty, which they did. That guy is not in town, so I can't ask him.

My question is has anyone here every sent their shoes back for repair? Did they charge you? Did you go through a local store/dealer? How long did it take for them to send them back? How satisfied were you with the work?

Thanks.

I have swapped out one BOA dial and cable on my S-Works road shoes once. It was a 10 min procedure. The cable crimped and wound up and cracked some of the teeth on the dial resulting in the need for a swap.

A quick search on Amazon shows a replacement dial for Louis Garneau but it looks like the same dial and kit, tool and cable found on my Specialized shoes. Might not hurt to ask if they are compatible on the Specialized tech site.

Contact BOA directly via their website and they will send you a free pair. No kidding! I got em. And they are modified with metal ratchets that have improve reliability.

For a long time, when riding the self-loosening Boas, I actually considered it a "feature", because my feet will ache on a long ride if I get my shoes too tight. So I would reach down and cinche them up tight when I say a hill approaching (where the jams always occur) and then they would have loosened up about 10 minutes later without me having to think about it. But that is just me. ;)

Boa have excellent customer service and will send you new dials + laces free of charge. I needed some recently and only took about 7 days for them to get to me in the UK

Head here https://www2.boatechnology.com/warranty.php and fill out the details. Then pick the dials that you need and complete the order for $0.

As others have stated BOA will send out free dials, cables and internals. It isn't too hard to install them but may require some patience the first time around. My specialized dealer installs them for free, but that is not true for all dealers.

Thanks for the link, I just got a new set as mine have been slipping for a few months. Nothing like getting out of the saddle for a climb and feeling a shoe almost fall off!

But it is not "just you". They have a serious design flaw that is still being worked on to this day. Cheap Chinese junk. You get what you pay for ... but in the case of Specialized, you pay a premium and still get an inferior product which is pretty much the case of most, but not all the items in their line.

I bought the 74's with kangaroo hide. Always had BOA problems, even after replacement with their "updated" design. Never again. Going back to top of the line Sidi's.

Seriously pissed right now. Finally got the replacement kits from BOA to do my shoes. Did the first 3 without a single issue at all. The the stuff out of the 4th only for the stump holding the screw to basically shred in half. You can tell the plastic is simply cooked dry from the sun, but the others were just fine! Going to try to do it despite it, but I suspect new shoes just will have to come my way very soon!!! Haven't being this angry in a long time. It's always the 2 cent part in the $400 equipment that breaks and ruins it!!

After trying for a bit, the screw went in and seems to be holding as the screw is longer than the stump. So, the part below the break is what is holding it in place. It is not a high torque area, so hopefully it will hold. These shoes fit so farm well to my funky feet, and since Specialized changed their sizing I don't want to go down this road again. Besides, I hate the colors of the new ones. Wishing they had the choice of all white!!

I guess the next question is what shoes are very similar to specialized s-works as far as fit, ventilation, and comfort? My feet are wide and a bit funky. These fit really well.

If you have the broken half of the nub (where could it possibly go ? It must have been in there) you could epoxy it back into place.

The next one down in the Specialized line (the Pro ? ...can't remember) fits virtually identically to the S-works. I almost bought that when they didn't have my size in S-wrks. It felt very close to the same. But then I found S-wrks at another dealer.

Broke in several pieces. Will go look them up.

I rode them for 2 hr and they seem to be holding, so we will see!
