Hi Julien,

Clear photo, it really shows the strange damage! Not sure how that could happen.

If you're handy with a file, you could gently remove the part(s) that sticks out. Similar to what alexgodmar did above, but you won't need to file all the ribs and not all the way around.

Either replacement expander will work.
- The older one fits only in the older (thin wall) forks.
- The new one fits in both new (thick wall) and older (thin wall) forks.

As always, be sure the expander is at the right depth to support the fork against the stem's lower clamping bolt.

I have the thin wall steerer (Supersix evo HM 2016)
As you can see in the photos, the width around the pivot is not the same. Is it normal because I wonder me if the expander has not scrape the steerer.
And for this thin wall steerer is it important that the expander is in contact too with the steerer in the hight part ?

Hi Julien,

Wow, you must be a professional photographer! Great and clear photos.

Normally the wall thickness varies a little in production. There is a tolerance. If in doubt, bring it to your Cannondale dealer and ask them to check the thickness. They can contact Cannondale customer support for specific information.

Many years ago, the ribs were intended to contact the inside of the steerer near the top stem bolt. But for years now, it's been normal that they don't. Without contact, there's no function for the ribs, so it's not necessary to have them. That's why the new expander has no ribs.

However, because the bending moment is higher at the bottom of the stem, it's still important to position the expander to support the steerer tube at the bottom stem bolt.

I have the same build with everything stock standard. Can anyone give advice to the following as I have been looking online but im unsure on brands etc.

- Replacement light weight expander and cap
- Brand of light weight quick releases
- Brand of light weight carbon bars in a traditional shape
- Brand of comfprtable light weight saddle.
-Anything else that is easy to swap out for a few Grams.

Light weight expander and cap, just like in the thread, KP017 and then grind it to size. Keeps the topcap closer to the stem ...

Bar & Stem ... That is a tricky one. I have a Fizik Cyrano R1 Stem/Bar combo on my SS, and a FSA OS-99/K-Force Light combo on my CAAD10. Fizik is ligther, but FSA is stiffer.

Saddle: Fizik Arione R1. Best for climbing ...

Anything else. Rim Tape (cheap to get light stuff, saves about 40g). Tubes (Continental SuperSonics are 50g, vs. the 125 you see otherwise). Pedals ... Look Blade Carbon Cr are 110g a piece and sell for less than $100 a pair now. Of course there is the cassette, which you could replace by the R9100 model (also the chain). You could replace the 8 arm spider ring with a 10 arm model and save 30g (next on my list). Of course then there are the ee-Brakes ... but all that is getting progressively more expensive for questionable value, other than saving weight.

Wheels ... The Hollowgrams that come with that model are ... well ... I'd recommend getting something with better bearings and spokes. The set that I got has a lot of resistance on the bearings, and despite the proper spoke tension does not feel very stiff. But getting better ones is a $1500+ expense.
