Nice. Do you have the 11sp shifters to dremel yet? I'm sure I had to dremel a bigger gap for the clamp than the pics earlier in this thread (maybe it's an optical illusion)... Maybe Red 22 has a narrower band?

I think I went a bit too far into the shifter body with the dremel tbh. Ah well that's what I get for trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole. Anyway, I put it all together with the clamps and installed them on the bars and it all feels totally solid. That plastic is really strong stuff!

@4ibanez - I do not have any Red 22 levers at the moment. Dudemanppl mentioned that Red 10 and Red 11 are compatible so I will try out the existing levers once I am done with this project. When I feel a little more artistic, I was thinking about carving more grooves out of the piece I just posted. We will see. Right now my fingers are too sore to do it. Lol.

This piece had the most material to remove. I always wondered how much more I can remove if I were able to remove the pins and have full access. I did not want to get carried away so my goal was to shave around 10 grams off this piece. Below is where I stopped after hitting that number. I still need to clean it up and even out all the edges.

Original Red: 26.65 grams
Tuned: 16.66 grams

26.65 - 16.66 grams = 9.99 grams

So as of now, I have another 5 grams to go before I can break 100 grams. I should be able to reach that.

@4ibanez - I am learning as I go. Your Evo build is super detailed and weight weenie as hell. You can do this derailleur too. It just takes some free time and I am on vacation this week.

I cleaned up the last aluminum piece and dropped a tiny bit of weight.

Original Red: 26.65 grams
Tuned: 16.11 grams

26.65 - 16.11 grams = 10.54 grams

Here is a sneak preview. I have not cut down the carbon parallelogram pins or figured out a way to secure them. I just pushed them in so I can take the pic for you all. None the less, carbon pins will be about a 3 gram weight savings. I still have another 3 grams to save with the AFC pivot bolt and another 2 grams to save with the AFC pulleys. I also have some ideas with the barrel adjuster which will also save me another 2 grams. There is even more weight to be saved since I have not replaced the 3 stock limit screws or the pinch bolt. My new goal is 96 grams.

My fingers are all messed up from Dremeling. I call them Dremel scars. I am a weight weenie gangster with some legit battle scars.

Are you going to get the dremeled pieces anodized? If so, which color?

...and nice work!

I wanted to make the aluminum parts black. If I use crazy colors I think I will get sick of it really quick. In 94, purple was cool. In 03, red was in. In 07, gold was the way to go. In 11, pink was in. Lol, so I think black is timeless and perfect for this application.

I was thinking about just painting the pieces. I am not sure which type of paint will bond with aluminum. I also risk gaining back the weight I removed. As for anodizing it black, I am not sure what condition the parts need to be in before coloring. Meaning, I dremeleled so much material off that the surfaces are no longer perfectly even. So, if I anodize in it's current state, how will it look? Any anodizing specialists out there that can chime in? What type of prep work is necessary?

I attempted to polish the aluminum pieces and the results were complete garbage. The polishing compound which turns to a dark grey color filled all the tiny pits left from the dremeling. So I was left with 2 shiny aluminum pieces with black imperfections throughout. I just created hours of extra work because I need to smooth the parts back down. From what I see so far, anodizing will proababy be a bad idea unless surfaces are perfect smooth.

I raided my wife's nail supplies. She always pays to get her nails done so I thought she wouldn't mind if I use her supplies. Well, she minded and then some. My bad for not asking first.

Spent a great deal of time sanding and buffing out all the pits. I am waiting for some more parts. Mainly some tuning bolts, carbon bits/pieces, and material to make the parallelogram pins. Until I get all of that, I cannot proceed any further.

You could speak with Toronto Cycles. Don't they do anodizing if you send them parts to do? There are tutuorials on youtube on how to do it as well.

Wow - this thread just gets better! Are you going to ride this bike if you can't get your wife back on the saddle?
