Turning my new project bike Titus Racer X into a 1x10

Currently Shimano XT Shimano shifter and rear der

Anyone have input on running 1x10 on horst link Racer X?

Do I really need a clutch rear or chain guide front?

For me a clutch is a must, riding without it has the chain drop quite a bit.

I saw you were looking for one. I have an xtr clutch der, it is used and could use a little tweak, clean and regrease though. I also have an almost new sram xo1 rear der and shifter, ridden 1 week. If you're interested pm me

Not compulsory.

I'm just running standard xt rear mech with 11-36 cassette and Hope retainer 34?? chainring on a Trance 26er

Chain never unshipped yet.

If you google either peak district uk, or Lake district and mtb'ing you'll find plenty of pics of the sort of stuff i tend to ride.
Steep, loose, rocky (babies head size rocks), along with a mix of trail centre routes.

I'll post a pic later of my set up, but other than it tidying stuff up around the bb area, there's not a lot to see.
I didnt think it would really be an advantage over a triple (being overgeared was the biggest worry) but happily proved wrong :)

It's a Hope 32T Retainer narrow/wide chainring, not a 34 as thought

Used to run x9 no clutch with race face narrow wide. 12months of riding very technical terrain and never dropped the chain. Did get quite a bit of slap tho.

Admittedly running 1x9, but (obviously) not a clutch mech and running a cheap narrow-wide I've never dropped the chain, including fairly aggresive red level trail centre riding, no guide fitted.

I'd say it is preferable, but a decent chainguide (like a blackspire stinger) will do the trick too.

Man I don't get how you guys survive without a clutch if you don't have a chain guide. I have XTR9000 with a wolftooth ring and after a month or so once the clutch starts loosening up I drop my chain as soon as the trail points downhill - even with a new ring and chain. I actually decided to run a light chainguide with the clutch cause I was still getting drops once it got going really fast and rough. Though I'm riding in whistler/squamish BC canada, and I know the trails here are definitely more demanding than most places.

Interesting - now I am wondering if some Narrow Wide rings retain better than others.

Seems Wolftooth drops more often than Hope, RaceFace and Absolute Black?

Bad news for me since I have the WT ring...

I went from std rings 2x10 (Control Tech 40t Alum/26t Experimental Prototype Ti) to 1x10 Wolf Tooth NW 32t Oval and I went from 2-3 drops per ride to no drops in the last 10 rides. I do not have a clutch derailleur nor a chain guide. The 40t was nearly new. However I am running an 11 speed KMC X11SL chain with my 1x10 setup and I think that helps. I now have 3-4 years on this model of chain and I have never broken it. YMMV!

How do you like the Magura Marta MT8? I am debating M9000 vs MT8 right now

I heard the MT8 can feel "wooden" ? And levers are a bit spongy?
